CHAPTER 18

The brightness outside makes my eyes squint.

I lift my head with difficulty and notice I’m stretched on the couch in my living room. I don’t remember how I got here. Why was I sleeping on the couch and not in my bed last night? I can vaguely recall losing consciousness and falling, but what happened next is a complete blank. I check parts of my body for any injuries, and I’m relieved when I find none. The fall couldn’t have been bad.

I peek at the clock on the wall, and it shows seven in the morning. It’s the usual time I wake up every day, but something is different today. I can’t point my finger.

A clattering in the kitchen causes me to crane my neck. I see no one. Instant fear kicks in, and I retreat onto the couch, listening. Did someone break in? I don’t know why, but Lucy comes to mind first. Has she returned? Did she find out that I got out of jail, and come back for a second chance?

I listen carefully, hoping any slight movements will reveal the intruder. A little hum, a cuss word under their breath … anything. But all I hear is the mugs or plates moved from one place to another.

Who is this?

Surprise replaces fear when Andrew walks across the living room. The tension inside me releases instantly as our eyes meet. My shoulders slump and I roll my eyes involuntarily. “What are you doing here? You scared the crap out of me.”

He stops in the middle of the living room. “Hey, you’re awake.” He gazes at the doors. “You left all your doors unlocked, young lady. Don’t you think you should lock doors at night?”

“I must have forgotten.” I rub my head, still feeling cloudy. “When did you get here?”

“This morning. I found you lying on the floor next to the coffee table. If I may suggest, a couch or a bed is a lot more comfortable.” He smiles.

“Ha, ha.” I quip. “You really think I wanted to sleep on the floor last night?”

Andrew looks at me, puzzled, and cocks his head. “What? You didn’t?”

“No, silly! I think I lost consciousness and fell to the floor last night.” I shrug. “No idea what happened.”

Andrew sits next to me and takes my hand. “Are you okay now? Can I get you anything?”

“Maybe a glass of water. Thank you.”

Andrew gets up and trots to the kitchen. “Maybe you should go see a doctor and get some blood tests!” he yells across the floor, so I can hear his advice.

Doctors. Like the one who falsely diagnosed me with lung cancer? I don’t trust doctors, and besides, I feel physically okay. It was anxiety that got me all worked up last night.

He returns with a glass of iced water and something else in his hand. A cracker.

“Take this, too. You’re probably starved, right?”

“I could eat.”

Only then do I feel my stomach reacting in protest. I’m hungry for sure.

“Okay, let me make something real quick.
